what is it?

  • They are microbit-powered, water-purifying science experiment kits that connect to your tablet or phone, so you can experience coding and water exploration hands-on.

  • This experiment/coding kit is an ideal starting point for students and educators alike — introducing skills relevant to conservation robotics, coding, environmental science, design, and more.

who can use them?

  • These kits are for intuitive explorers who like to tinker with various STEM topics from conservation robotics, to coding, and design. They are suitable for 6th grade and up, making then a great fit for class projects or on your own.

why these kits?

  • These robotic coding kits for children, teens and adults can boost confidence in STEM topics. They foster independent learning,  water literacy, and multi-purpose coding skills.

  • They are reusable and include the microbit library for you to explore further.

  • You get to support a non-profit and make an impact while learning.

is it complicated?

  • Not really! Coding is easy in this visual coding system with a drag-and-drop interface. The difficulty level is intermediate, but the kit can be used for more advanced activities if you prefer.

  • Additional activities can be purchased through the micro:bit store.

learn and tackle water issues through conservation robotics experiences

    • digital curriculum: an extensive curriculum is there to guide you.

    • flexible experimenting: the hands-on flexibility allows you to tinker with various systems (coding for games, light sensors etc.)

    • dual language: the curriculum prepared by the Youth Code Jam is available in English and Spanish.

    • microbit magic: the kit’s microbit is compatible with micro:bit by Microsoft. You can start hundreds of different projects and get coding!

MakeWater’s Camps In Action: case study one

Detriot Zoo

(Low Complexity Activity)

The Detroit Zoo incorporated six MakeWater microbit kits into a two-week program designed for incoming 9th graders.

The hands-on program focused on water education, where students engaged in an activity over two days exploring water purification methods through coding and real-world applications. This immersive experience allowed students to dive deeper into environmental science, fostering their understanding of water sustainability.

New Mexico PBS

(Low Complexity Activity)

On October 17, 2024, MakeWater had the privilege of presenting workshops at Indigi-STEAM, a day-long program hosted by New Mexico PBS for over 200 Native and Indigenous high school students. This project, primarily funded by a grant from WETA in support of the documentary film Leonardo, emphasized the integration of Indigenous knowledge with STEM education.

The day began with students watching a PBS video, Indigi-Genius, which highlighted how Indigenous peoples around the world have long understood the importance of water and its sustainable use. From deserts to oceans, the video illustrated Indigenous communities' deep knowledge of the interconnected cycles of water and life.

Following the video, students participated in group activities, conducting a water purification experiment using electricity and coding. This hands-on experiment linked modern electrocoagulation techniques with traditional Indigenous water purification methods, providing a rich learning experience that bridged contemporary and ancestral practices.

Black Girls Code

(Medium Complexity Activity)

In celebration of Earth Day, Black Girls CODE hosted an empowering workshop where students engaged in hands-on research using MakeWater kits. This interactive experience helped students gain confidence, explore their interests in STEM, and develop a passion for environmental science. Together, MakeWater and Black Girls CODE are inspiring the next generation of environmental change-makers and fostering a brighter future.

SAWS

(Medium Complexity Activity)

MakeWater participated in the "Get to Know Your H2O" event hosted by San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS), where 120 students and adults engaged in hands-on water purification activities.

Participants learned how to purify water using coding and explored accessible Youth Code Jam worksheets, designed for a broad audience from elementary students to adults. The event also featured demonstrations of SAWS’ pipeline televising equipment, electronic meters, and laboratory services, creating an enriching experience for the community.
